THE INTERNALIZED PAGE PROJECT

My collaboration with renowned sculptor Charles Long began in late 1997. My former professor and mentor artist Jennifer Steinkamp (one of the 1st artists working in 3D animation) recommended me to Jane Hart, director and curator of Muse[X]: one of only a handful of fine-art digital-print houses at the time. The final project was a collection of digital prints in a specially designed file box.

At the time, Charles was living in New York, and I was living in Los Angeles. Email existed, but it was not the go-to method of communication. Charles and I often spoke on landline telephones and exchanged FedEx packages to collaborate. He FedEx-ed me his pencil line drawings done on various types of 8.5 x 11″ lined writing paper. I then created 3-dimensional forms from these drawings using Alias 3D software.

My instructions from Charles were simple.
“Manipulate the lined paper; the lines become pattern (in perspective/blurry/out of synch/broken/bent…).
“Include every third error that happens in the process.”
We worked back and forth on the images for months to achieve the desired results.

Digital perfection was never the goal; the hand was to be seen, not disguised. The feel of the prints was to be in close relationship to the original drawings while simultaneously using the highest-end technology available at the time.

THE INTERNALIZED PAGE PROJECT Vol. II

The success of the first Internalized Page Project- prompted a volume 2, which we executed in the same manner described above.

HOLIDAY SITUATIONS

In 1999 Charles participated in an ongoing project between artists and the store Saks Fifth Avenue (on Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles). He titled the project “Holiday Situations.” Each exterior window featured one of Charles’ sculptures alongside a model.

Charles and I again collaborated to create a third digital print box set based on the window displays for Saks. The box set also included a white vinyl album of original Christmas music by Mark Mothersbaugh. We collaborated similarly to the Internalized Page Projects.
